My tree was a portait on pale blue

slowing slipping into sleep,

Counting leaves instead of sheep

the leaves snapping as they fell.

snap, one,

Snap, two

in a seven minute step.

then sliding on the sidewalk

ticking along with the wind.

Jets practice linear algebra

drawing parallel white lines

as the tree counts,

falls back to safe slumber.

I’ve spent 28 leaves here,

a good way to track time.
