that night wasn’t silent
history split
down the middle

and even the stars
parted ways-

A young lady
walking those quiet streets
looking,
no vacancy
no vacancy

it wasn’t silent-
the cane on the cobbles
the stares on them-
a couple walking
the coldness
penetrating
her pain growing,

it wasn’t silent.
The stall
animals and straw
a courseness,
no midwife
no help

only pain
and tears
falling on dry straw,

not a silent night,
indeed,
it was not silent.
